Fair offers great time for whole family

A new Antique Tractor and Farm Equipment Show and a juggler will be the newest attractions at the Shawano County Fair this year, said Shawano Area Agricultural President Dale Hodkiewicz. The fair will take place Aug. 28 to Sept. 2 in Shawano and will feature many exhibitions for visitors and participants to enjoy, ranging from animals, plants, baking and art. “It’s a good way for kids in 4-H to display their works, especially in the animal category,” Hodkiewicz said. For musical entertainment, many free acts will perform in President’s Park including Chad Przybylski & The Polka Rhythms, Magical Brass and Roger’s Polka Party. Hitting the stage under the grandstand to keep fair-goers tapping their toes will be The Wolf River Band, Johnny Wad and Jagged Highway. Performing Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 will be the Juggler with the Yellow Shoes, who Hodkiewicz said does an excellent strolling and juggling act. “It works with the kids,” he said. “We haven’t had anything like that, and he will be doing that underneath the grandstand, which is all free.” Hodkiewicz also said The Antique Tractor and Farm Equipment Show will be up and ready by Aug. 29 at the Crawford Center, and then will run daily for the rest of the fair. For those spectators looking for motor sports action, demolition derby racer Nick Hesse of Belle Plaine said the fair is a great place to be. “There is stuff that goes on at our fair that doesn’t happen at other fairs,” said Hesse, who has been driving in the demolition derbies for six years. “We have the trailer races, and if you are just into motor sports this is a good place to go with all of the entertainment.” The County Farm Tractor Pull will take place Aug. 28 at 7 p.m., followed by the Shawano Speedway Enduro Race Aug. 30 and Championship Night Aug. 31. Audiences can then enjoy a show making its second appearance at the fair Sept. 1, a three-in-one event featuring Spectator Eliminators, Demolition Football and Trailer Races. The demolition derby will then take place Sept. 2. Hesse said these events are a rush to compete in and are a lot of fun to watch. “It happens once a year, and it isn’t like the other races at Shawano Speedway,” Hesse said. “You get to watch cars smash into each other. You just don’t see that every day.” Thrill-seekers can enjoy the Rainbow Valley Rides on the Midway during the fair, with $18 wristband specials for unlimited rides taking place Aug. 29-30 and Sept. 1-2. Many other activities, including bingo, the Kids Klassic Pedal Pull, a livestock auction and beer and wine tasting will also be available for visitors to enjoy. New this year is cosmic bingo, which runs from 9 to 11 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. This year’s Fairest of the Fair Megan Welk said the fair is always a great opportunity for people to meet new friends and catch up with those they have not seen for a while. “I think it’s a great place to bring friends and families together,” Welk said. Daily admission and parking are both $5 throughout the fair. Season passes are $20. For more information visit www.shawanocountyfair.net or call 715-526-7069. Hodkiewicz said the fair is a great benefit for the community. “We have about 14-16 permanent stands on the grounds and these are all nonprofit organizations, so this is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year, so it definitely means a lot to the community,” Hodkiewicz said. “These places have opportunities to raise money, and they give a lot of it back to the community, so that is a big ability of the fair.”
