The chief and assistant chief of the Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department have resigned. The city’s Police and Fire Commission accepted the resignations Monday of Chief Dean Poole and Assistant Chief Scott Eggleston.

Two civil suits seeking damages against the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department following the murder of a Wittenberg man last year were complicated this week by a court ruling allowing the convicted murderer to also be named as a defendant. Joshua P. Johnson, 23, was committed in December to life in a mental institution for killing his father, Donald P. Johnson, 53, at their Wittenberg home on Feb. 21, 2012.

Water rates in Shawano Lake Sanitation District No. 1 are going up about 14 percent. The district serves about 2,274 residential accounts along Shawano Lake in four municipalities. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission on Thursday issued a new rate order for the district, which had not sought a major rate increase since 1999.

Shawano Community High School is dusting off a classic for its fall drama production, which opens Thursday. Director Mark Otte, who teaches English and theater at SCHS, is turning back to the bard, also known as William Shakespeare, as his students prepare to present the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.” “I like doing Shakespeare about every three years,” Otte said.

I remember last winter, and how the snow and sleet, and mess, just seemed to come. Each time I would drive my van into the garage, the snow would melt off of it and make the floor a muddy mess. It was muddy simply because there was so much dirt on the floor. What’s more, the dirt would stick to my shoes and it would get tracked into the house. I vowed that I would clean the garage as soon as it warmed up.
