Wisconsin had 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending July 26, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. A dry week allowed for good progress on small grain harvesting, but there were many reports of dry soils and a need for rain.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 9% very short, 18% short, 71% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 7% very short, 18% short, 71% adequate and 4% surplus.
Corn silking was 52% complete compared to the 5-year average of 51%. Corn condition was 74% good to excellent, down 5 percentage points from last week. Soybeans were 78% blooming compared to the average of 69%. Thirty-three percent of soybeans were setting pods. Soybean condition was 70% good to excellent, down 4 percentage points from last week.
Oats were 83% coloring compared to the average of 81%. Oats were 27% harvested. Oat condition was rated 79% good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week. Winter wheat was 51% harvested compared to the average of 45%. Winter wheat condition was 79% good to excellent, down 2 percentage points from last week.
The second cutting of alfalfa hay was 95% complete compared to the average of 90%. The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 32% complete. All hay condition was 73% good to excellent, down 3 percentage points from last week.
Pasture and range condition was 57% good to excellent, down 4 percentage points from last week.
