At its July meeting, the Oconto River Chapter of Trout Unlimited awarded the Don Wagner Memorial College Scholarship to Kayla Reed, of Sobieski. The $500 scholarship is awarded to a student anticipating a career in a conservation-related field. Reed is majoring in aquatic science and fisheries and water resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Shawano Pathways is inviting bicyclists on a scenic fall ride for the 10th annual Bike the Barn Quilts on Sept. 24. The event features non-competitive rides ranging from 17 to 70 miles showcasing many of Shawano County’s almost 400 barn quilts. A 22-mile guided tour is also available. Registration fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch, maps, signed routes and food/water stations. Entry is $40 before Sept.

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has appointed Dr. Jennifer Flatt to the role of vice president of student services. In this position, Flatt will serve as a member of the college’s executive leadership team where she provides strategic direction for student service programs and activities to enhance student success.

Summer is a good time to get outside, be physically active, and enjoy seasonal activities after being cooped up during the Wisconsin winters. While being outdoors and active is good for you in many ways, sometimes you can get too much of a good thing — like too much sun. “Outdoor time is an essential part of the summer for many of us,” said Dr. Abigail Taub, a dermatologist with Aspirus Health in Stevens Point.

Life — What does it mean to you? From conception to death, life for me is a journey. I have had what would seem as insurmountable mountains to climb and valleys so low that I felt I would never reach the peaceful calm plateau. Somehow, some way, I have survived the grueling mountains to climb and have walked through the low valleys on my life’s journey thus far. How have I made it this far on my life’s journey?

Shawano County’s 389th barn quilt, called Antique Star, is now displayed on a barn owned by Matt and Katie Jo Bohm at N4435 Green Valley Road, Pulaski. Matt and Katie Jo purchased their 80-acre farm from John and Dorothy Socha in September 2016.
