Suring School evacuated after bomb threat

The Oconto County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a bomb threat made Dec. 9 at Suring Public School.

At 9:42 a.m., the county emergency dispatch center received a call in regard to an active threat being reported in the school. The Suring police chief and Oconto County deputies immediately responded to the scene.

An initial investigation revealed a student typed, “I have a bomb” on their Chromebook device. The school district’s Securely Technology Monitoring System alerted school administration of the threat.

An emergency response plan protocol was activated with students and faculty immediately evacuated from the facility.

A thorough and systematic search of the facility was conducted, according to Sheriff Todd Skarban, and no items of concern were discovered. A person of interest has been identified.

This is an ongoing criminal investigation, and there is no active threat to the school or community, Skarban said.

Also assisting were the Suring Public School District, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Gillett Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Suring Fire Department, Gillett Area Ambulance Service, St. John’s Lutheran School and Lamers Bus Lines.
