Shawano County Supervisor Dennis Knaak is being challenged by Steven Steinke for a two-year term on the county board.
The election will be April 7.
Both men were sent questionnaires about their candidacies. Steinke did not respond.
What made you decide to run for this position?
Knaak: I decided to run again for supervisor of District 25 at the request of residents of Town of Birnamwood, village of Eland and the Town of Wittenberg Ward 1, the area I represent as well as current county board supervisors from districts next to ours.
What experience do you have to serve in this position?
Knaak: My experience includes serving the Town of Birnamwood as supervisor and town clerk for 34 years and served as county supervisor District 25 representative since 2007.
What is one of the biggest challenges facing the county, and how do you plan to address it?
Knaak: Challenges facing the county include retaining good employees, updating county facilities and making them more safe and functional as well as the budget.
Revenues and expenses continue to be an ongoing debate to balance any budget. Do you favor searching for new revenue streams or reducing programs, staff or other expenses? Please provide examples, if possible.
Knaak: The committees and commissions I serve on at the county level are always looking for revenue streams to provide programs, reduce costs and still provide our residents with the most service. As always, I will represent District 25 residents and Shawano County residents with the future needs of making our county a great place to live, raise a family, place for employment, recreation and tourism.
