Shawano Community High School’s award-winning jazz bands came home after taking top honors Feb. 27 from the University of Louisville’s annual jazz festival — an invitation only event that features outstanding high school ensembles from across the country.
Shawano was the only school representing Wisconsin at the festival.
Shawano Jazz II performed at midday, earning a rating of Excellent. For many members of Jazz II, this marked their first time performing at a major jazz festival, making the recognition even more meaningful.
Later in the afternoon, Shawano Jazz I took the stage and also received an Excellent rating, scoring 97 out of 100. The festival clinician praised the group’s performance, noting that they played so exceptionally well he had no critique to offer.
Individual musicians were recognized for their talent and artistry. Ireland Setterman on alto saxophone and Drew Hagedorn on tenor saxophone each received Outstanding Soloist Awards for their performances. Also honored as outstanding musicians were Jill Guenther, Derrick LiVigni, Sawyer Keuschel, Jericho Moses, Evie Kuehl and Payton Skalitski.
The day concluded with a highlight performance by world-renowned jazz artist Wycliffe Gordon, providing students with the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by one of the greats in jazz.
