Joel Wondra, Shawano School District athletic and activities director, will be retiring in December after the Shawano School Board approved it Oct. 27.
Wondra first came aboard as the athletic director for Shawano Community High School in August 2018, and he was later tasked with overseeing all extracurricular activities in the district. He was one of the few administrators who remained with the district after a mass exodus in 2022 due to conflicts with the district superintendent.
However, Wondra came under fire a couple of times since then, including accusations in January 2024 by Hannah Yeager, a student representative for the board at the time, claiming he discriminated against girls’ teams over boys’ teams and favored sports over other clubs and activities.
Wondra also came under fire in February of this year after parent Adriana Moses told the school board that her son was attacked by him after his home was toilet papered by pranksters. The disorderly conduct case is going through Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court and has not reached a resolution.
School officials are currently looking for a replacement for Wondra.
