Sacred Heart Catholic School students spent a full day immersed in hands‑on learning at Navarino Nature Center, engaging in outdoor exploration that strengthened their academic skills, teamwork and appreciation for the outdoors.
Throughout the visit, students participated in a variety of interactive activities designed to connect classroom learning with real‑world experiences, including:
• Working together to construct natural shelters using branches and evergreen boughs. This activity encouraged collaboration, problem‑solving and creativity while giving students a deeper understanding of outdoor survival concepts.
• Practicing using a compass to navigate the landscape, guided by nature center staff. This skill-building exercise helped them understand direction, spatial awareness and the importance of observation in the natural world.
• Comparing wingspans with wildlife models inside the nature center, exploring animal habitats and engaging with displays that brought science lessons to life.
• Examining rocks, minerals and fossils, discovering the beauty and complexity of Earth’s layers through hands‑on investigation.
• Spending time on the rope net and wooded trails, allowing students to enjoy unstructured play, strengthen friendships, and experience the joy of learning outdoors.
These experiences support Sacred Heart’s mission to educate the whole child — mind, body and spirit. By stepping outside the classroom, students gain confidence, curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
