The Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team swamped Bay Conference foe Marinette 76-44 Friday in Marinette.
The Panthers (10-1, 6-1 Bay) led 13-10 after the first quarter and rolled to a 34-20 halftime lead. They outscored the Marines 24-8 in the third quarter.
“Marinette played very well in the first quarter,” Oconto Falls coach Mike Kaczmarek said. “Marinette came out with some intensity we didn’t match. The second quarter, we matched their intensity.”
Oconto Falls also had to overcome 10 turnovers in the first half.
“The second half we played much better,” Kaczmarek said. “We shot the ball much better. We’ve been working on that.”
McKenna Larsen led Oconto Falls with 17 points. Carly Lemke added 14, and Elizabeth Watzka had 10. Madison Helmle and Elizabeth Manns each scored eight.
Abby Dufrane scored 12 to lead Marinette (1-11, 1-8 Bay).
The Panthers remain a game and a half behind New London (10-2, 8-0 Bay), which handed Oconto Falls its only loss Jan. 17. Oconto Falls is a half-game behind Hortonville (10-3, 7-1 Bay), which it faces on the road Friday.
“Hortonville is going to be a very tough match for us,” Kaczmarek said. “We were hoping to play them here first, but that didn’t work out. We’ll have to match their size — they’re bigger than we are — and we’ll have to play well on the road.”
Results from the Panthers’ game against Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday were not available by the Times Herald’s press time.
