This seems to be an old-fashioned winter, like we used to have in days of old. If it isn’t a deep freeze, then it’s snowing, or worse, we are getting freezing rain.
A week ago Friday, as I was traveling home from Shawano, there was only a slight mist falling. I was a little bit upset that I had wasted money on getting the van washed, not that it wasn’t needed, but now it was getting salted up once again. I questioned why I bothered. After all, the van is far from new; in fact, it is getting close to 10 years old.
Those were my musings, when suddenly the mist started freezing on my windshield. I was glad I was within 10 minutes of home and safety, and realized that the salt is needed this winter.
The month of January seems to have the effect of giving a lot of people the feeling of cabin fever. To avoid that, I like to go to Total Fitness to exercise two or three times a week. On the days I don’t go, I pedal my exercise bike, but that is boring, compared to working out with other people.
A cardio class that is filled with smiling people, all working hard at keeping up with the steps, is fun. Watching others doing what I am doing keeps me on track, and the 45-minute class seems to fly past. I don’t always know everyone’s name, but some know me, because they are readers of this column.
On Wednesday morning, someone got the chair out and ready for me, the word “celebrity” was bantered around. I can laugh at that, but I think they are all celebrities.
Because I need to travel a distance, I usually try to stay for more than one class, and it also gives me the opportunity to get some errands done also.
A day like last Tuesday, I would not have gone to Shawano. I thought I could at least go to Tigerton and get some things taken care of; after all, I live in Tigerton. However, the snow was coming down and blowing around so fast and furious, it was a white out. Not only was the visibility horrible, but also the road was slippery.
I made two stops, and then slunk back home, grateful to get the old van back into the garage. The driveway still has a layer of ice under that snow from Friday, and by the time I got home, the snow had piled up to greater heights.
One of my grandsons does my driveway plowing, but I usually don’t expect him to come for a couple of inches. That blizzard that happened on Tuesday required his attention. I didn’t ask him to come in the middle of the night, but he did. When I got up Wednesday morning, the driveway was plowed, and there is a huge pile of snow in front of my living room window.
All I can say is January is over half way done. A month from now, we will be into February, with March being right around the corner, followed with April showers. That is what I am thinking, and I am not changing my mind.
