The Shawano Woman’s Club recently announced a significant increase in the scholarships they are awarding to four local high school students and two adult learners at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in 2026.

Spring migration is underway, and while I’ve missed the birds that journeyed south for the winter, I can’t help but pause to appreciate the ones that never left. Throughout the coldest days of the year, these hardy residents have provided life and movement in an otherwise quiet landscape — frequenting backyard feeders and offering moments of liveliness during long winter stretches.

Awards were presented to 12 area students during the SkillsUSA Wisconsin State Leadership and Skills Conference closing ceremonies held April 8 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Madison.

Conrad Kreutzberg, with Pulaski High School, took gold in the printing and design category. Pulaski also saw Caleb Theuerkauf take bronze in the electronics category.

The Holt and Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood will again be welcoming guests this summer.

Free guided tours are available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Operated by Holt Lumber Company from 1881 to 1927, the camp is listed on the national historic register. This is the oldest logging camp in America sitting exactly where it was built.

Jackson Raiment hit a solo home run in Bonduel’s 6-4 come-from-behind win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood in CWC-East action.

Joe Felhofer hit 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Aiden Hillsberg hit 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Beckett Hartlaben was also 2-for-3.

Tri-County Early Meet

Gresham/Bowler’s boys and girls track teams each placed fifth among eight teams at Plainfield.

The girls scored 46 points, while the boys tallied 36.

Addison Fischer placed second in the triple jump and sixth in the 400-meter dash.

Notre Dame 21, Pulaski 1

Pulaski’s girls lacrosse team dropped to 0-2 in the Bay Valley Conference after a 21-1 loss to Notre Dame.

Shawano County Highway Department crews built 4-foot sand berms on each side of the Balsam Row Road Dam to prevent the dam from failing.

Sheriff George Lenzner said the sheriff’s department and emergency management were notified just before 5 p.m. April 14 of the dam’s risk of failure.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood FFA paired with the Shawano County Farm Bureau to host an event that featured 21 businesses directly connected to the agriculture industry.

A total of 290 students from Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School and surrounding school districts attended the April 9 event.
