Gresham/Bowler overwhelms Amherst The Bowler/Gresham high school boys soccer team had eight goals to get its first win of the season Thursday against Amherst in Gresham. With Gresham/Bowler (1-2) leading 2-0 to begin the second half, Drew Payne scored four straight goals, the first on an assist by Trace Miller and the rest unassisted. Winning in dramatic fashion, the Bonduel High School football team improved to 2-0 with a 14-9 win over Peshtigo in a nonconference game Thursday in Peshtigo. The Bears (2-0, 0-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) trailed 9-7 after giving up a safety on a high snap out of the back of the end zone on a punt in the fourth quarter. The game turned when, with about three minutes remaining, Bonduel stopped Peshtigo near the 50-yard line on fourth down. W

High school in a small town is not always easy, and moving to a bigger city can be even more difficult. Robby McGhee, a 2003 Shawano Community High School graduate formerly known as Robby Schuettpelz, has taken those feelings and turned them into a puppet musical called “The Burden of Being,” currently being performed in The Alchemist Theatre in Milwaukee.

Cake funds will go to cancer research Kayla Clark, a 13-year-old member of the Belle Plaine 4-H Club, made a pink breast cancer ribbon for her entry in the cake decorating project at the fair. She plans to donate half of what she makes at the cake sale Friday to breast cancer research.

You can’t just bottle up any beer and enter it in the Shawano County Fair’s beer and wine contest. Mike Conard, a certified beer and wine judge from Kewaunee, will know the subtle differences, and he will call you out on them. Thursday’s judging was more than an opportunity for bragging rights.

Dennis Ladwig comes to the Shawano County Fair tractor pull every year. It’s a chance for him and his 1937 John Deere to compete against friends. “Probably since 2003, we come every year,” Ladwig said.

No visit to the Shawano County Fair can end without a visit to the food booths along the midway. Many of them are run by church groups, veterans organizations and other nonprofit organizations that use the profits for a variety of community outreach projects, scholarships and more.

Aubrey Netzel has done well at the Shawano County Fair over the years, so it is not unusual that she again will be involved in several competitions at this year’s fair, which opened Wednesday at the fairgrounds in Shawano. A member of the Belle Plaine 4-H Club for 10 years, Netzel said her favorite projects are rabbits and poultry, which are yearlong projects. “I’ve been in them for so long,” said Netzel, who will be a senior this fall at Clinton
