Packers get Week 1 test in San Francisco

A year ago the season opener between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers was, properly, hyped as an early test of two of the NFC’s best teams. As important as that game was, this year’s game, also the season opener, means more. Keys to the game
Green Bay Packers Stop Kaepernick Easier said than done, the Green Bay Packers spent an entire offseason trying to figure out how to win this game. Most of that preparation went into stopping Kaepernick and the read option. As the Baltimore Ravens proved in the Super Bowl, it can be done. The Packers will need to place pressure on the quarterback early and often.

Fun, wrecks at the fair
Sunday’s events at Shawano Speedway did not have the drama of Saturday night’s championships, but wreckage and fun more than made up for it. The three-in-one show featured spectator eliminators, demolition football and trailer races, a new event for the speedway. County Fair Notebook
Eli goes 6-for-6 at horse show Sarah Vandenelzen, of Lena, and her horse, Eli, won grand championships in all six of the classes they entered at the Open Class horse show Saturday at the Crawford Center. Vandenelzen, who qualified to participate in the show because she grew up in Shawano and was active in the 4-H Club’s horse program, was proud of Eli’s showing. “He was very good,” Vandenelzen said. “He was a very good boy today.

Polka band performs at fair for 40th year
Perennial polka favorite Jerry Voelker celebrated four decades as a Shawano County Fair attraction Sunday when he and his orchestra gave their 40th annual performance at President’s Park. “It’s been a total joy all these years,” Voelker said, and he gave thanks to former fair manager Charlie O’Brien for getting the tradition started. “Charlie was brave enough to hire us that first year,” he said. Menasha man killed in head-on crash
A Menasha man who was wanted in connection with a domestic disturbance died early Tuesday after his speeding SUV slammed head-on into a semitrailer and burst into flames. Keith L. Carpenter, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. He was the sole occupant of the SUV. The collision happened Tuesday about 12:45 a.m.

Donald K. Peterson
Donald K. Peterson, of Napa, Calif., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. He was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Oconto Falls to Frank and Margaret (Kadlec) Peterson. He graduated from Marinette High School on May 31, 1938. He was married on Nov. 4, 1944, to Ione Mitchell in Bonduel. She preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2005. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napa.
