Yes, it is about time we turn the calendar over to February! Somehow the month of January dragged on way too long. Even though it is the same 31 days in length each and every year, in 2014 seemed to go on twice as long.
So, I say farewell to January, and I hope the traditional January thaw shows up in February. At least this is a short month, and it has Valentine’s Day.
It is amazing how full my February calendar has already become. Meanwhile, I have used my stay at home, way too cold to go anywhere, days in a good way. I am making good progress on the wedding quilt for a wedding in June.
A few weeks back, I was nearly in a panic realizing that I had a challenging quilt to have done in a few short months, and now that I am working on those challenging parts, and they seem to be coming out on point, satisfaction is replacing the panic. I can hardly wait to see it when it is finished.
Meanwhile, my appliances are showing some wear and tear, and I am uncertain in their reliability. The side-by-side refrigerator/freezer in the kitchen is working fine, other than the freezer door. What once was shut tight when closed has lost some of its cling. The magnet strip around the door is losing its holding power.
Right now that is important, as every inch in a freezer is being utilized to the fullest, since I purchased half a beef at the end of last year. My little chest freezer in the garage got filled up, the freezer part of the refrigerator in the garage got some of the hamburger; and just about everything else that needs freezing got bumped to the kitchen freezer.
All was well until I noticed the freezer portion in that refrigerator was no longer freezing well. The hamburger seemed fine, but the pizza, the hot dogs and other items were thawed out.
Because of the weather, I haven’t had to be overly cautious about the situation in the garage, but it won’t stay like this forever (sure hope not), so it bears concern for the future.
Now I have everything out of the freezer part of the fridge out in the garage. Slowly I am throwing some things out. After all, things tend to get forgotten and old in freezers, and it is probably best not to eat them.
By now the meat all fits into the chest freezer, where it seems very safe. I am trying to remember to close the door to the freezer in the kitchen and make sure it is tight. I don’t see any frost around the edges, so it must seal fairly well. I have been advised to put Vaseline around the edge of the magnetic strip, and around the part where it seals to. I did find the Vaseline but haven’t attempted to put it on as yet.
I am all about celebrating February. It seems like a good thing to do after what we have endured the past two months. What the groundhog sees doesn’t seem to matter much as to predicting the weather, but I have a feeling of something warmer in our weather. Of course, that probably means snow.
