Oscar Schumann, 83, of Shawano, passed away on Friday morning, Jan. 31, 2014, at ManorCare in Shawano. He was born on Feb. 26, 1930, in Chicago, the youngest child of Maria (Knapp) and Alvin Schumann, and the only natural born citizen of the immigrant Schumann family.
Oscar grew up in the Chicago area, delivering newspapers and doing other odd jobs at a very early age to help prevent the deportation of the family during the Great Depression. At the age of 14 Oscar became a typesetter for a Chicago printer. His first jobs were related to the production of war-related materials. Oscar continued as a typesetter for the next 60 years, working for a large corporation in Chicago, and then in his own shop in Shawano until his retirement.
Oscar was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and was stationed in Korea, where he served for 18 months as a gun sergeant of a 105 Howitzer. After leaving Korea, he continued his career as a typesetter and also served as an Army Reservist until the early 1960s.
On Oct. 7, 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Dorothy “Dottie” (Lauer) in Chicago. In 1969, they moved to Shawano and briefly owned Shawano Printing Company. He then opened his own typesetting shop at the family residence in Belle Plaine.
Oscar was active in the Shawano community. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce from January 1973 until December 1974. A good member of the Shawano Kiwanis Club, he served as president, vice president, secretary and also as district lieutenant governor. He is a life member of the Shawano VFW Post 2023, where he served as post commander. He is also a 30-year member of Shawano American Legion Post 117 and the 40et8. He also served as coordinator for both the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard. For 15 years he worked for the Shawano County Department of Social Services, delivering meals on wheels, which he truly enjoyed. He also golfed for many years at the Golden Sands in the Wednesday Night Twilight League. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dottie, of Shawano; his daughter, Beth; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; his brothers, Oskar and Walter; a brother, Otto; and three sisters, Gertrude Schumann, Elizabeth Lind and Frieda Johnston.
Funeral services for Oscar Schumann will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Pastor Susan Phillips will officiate. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery of Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service on Saturday from 12 p.m. until the hour of service. Military honors for Oscar will be conducted by Shawano American Legion Post 117 and the Shawano VFW Post 2023 Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers and plants, the family has requested memorials to the Shawano County Humane Society in the name of Oscar Schumann.
