Three capital projects are on tap for Shawano County government in 2027, and there are no plans to borrow any money to have that work completed.
The executive committee Sept. 16 agreed to use current funds for the work. The three projects are:
• Replacing the log cabin siding on the Department of Health Services Lakeland building with steel siding at a cost of $110,750.
• Replacing two HVAC air handlers at the pavilion at Shawano Lake County Park for $62,000.
• Building new boat slips at the lake park for $60,000.
Nichole Zuehl, finance director, said the county has enough funds now to avoid borrowing anything for these projects.
“We do have about $500,000 in our CIP fund,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of projects come in under budget this year and last year, so I’m proposing for the first two — the Lakeland building steel siding and the park pavilion air handlers — that is fully funded by our CIP fund.”
The boat slips would be paid for through the parks vehicle and equipment replacement fund.
“Due to prior vehicle replacement projects coming in under budget, there is approximately $50,000 available in that fund,” Zuehl said.
Earlier, the capital improvement projects committee discussed the deferral of a new highway department wash bay. In 2024, that project had an estimated cost of $1.6 million.
The county will continue to review the project annually and evaluate potential funding options for the future. Supervisor Matt Pleshek suggested setting aside funding each year to help reduce the impact of a large one-time expenditure if the project is approved at a later date.
