A 15-year-old boy from Lena died as the result of a snowmobile accident Jan. 13, according to a news release from the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim has been identified as Kyler Cook.

Sheriff Todd Skarban said law enforcement was notified of the single-vehicle crash at 7:32 p.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed the snowmobile was traveling east on Arndt Road in the Town of Lena on private property. It appears the driver lost control, and the snowmobile was found on its side in the ditch.

Life-saving measures were attempted, and the teen was transported to an area hospital where he died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Lena school officials cancelled school for all students in grades 4K-12 on Jan. 19.

Visitation for Cook was the morning of Jan. 19, with the funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m.

“To support the large number of our students and staff who will be supporting the family and paying their final respects to Kyler, we will be canceling school on Monday for all grades 4K-12,” Superintendent Ben Pytleski wrote in a letter to the community. “We are not only expecting attendance to be very low that day, but logistically, it will be difficult for us to cover all of our classrooms and provide adequate supervision.”

He asked community members to keep the Cook family in their thoughts and prayers as they grieve this loss.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, with the sheriff’s department and the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office assisting.

The sheriff’s department was assisted by the DNR, Coleman Rescue, County Rescue Paramedics and the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office.
