Michael McDermid, owner of Performance Excavating, was granted a 10-year renewal of his non-metallic mining extraction conditional use permit by the Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee on Jan. 7.
McDermid’s previous permit for non-metallic mining was renewed multiple times and was set to expire July 7.
“We’re digging sand out and just hauling it for bedding for farmers,” McDermid said. “The woods and stuff is staying. The stuff that we did take out … is getting reclaimed.”
The site will be reclaimed with the topsoil that was stripped off to access the sand underneath. McDermid said there is a possibility of creating a pond in the center of the site.
It is expected the site will be entirely excavated within the time frame of the new permit.
McDermid’s site is on 40 acres at N4406 Old Dump Road in the Town of Angelica. The town board recommended approval in September 2025.
The parcels consist of woods and open space, as well as mapped wetlands in the wooded area and an unnamed creek in the northwest corner.
One of the previous conditions was removed by the committee as it was deemed unnecessary.
Kyle Waelchli, Shawano County zoning administrator, said Scott Konkle, senior planner with East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, suggested removing the condition regarding the former dump test wells. Waelchli said that condition was created to create another condition that requires a setback of 100 feet to be maintained from the old dumping areas.
The setback requirement will stay as part of the new permit.
