Residents have mixed reactions to county building proposal

Reactions were mixed after a 60-minute presentation about the proposed plans to construct a new courthouse and jail pod in Shawano County, as several dozen residents gathered March 12 at Shawano Community High School.

• Louis E. Ellwart, 54, Shawano, pleaded no contest March 10 to felony bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Judge William Kussel Jr. sentenced him to 240 days in county jail with credit for 154 days already served.

Oconto County Court News

• Randy L. Brempell, 54, Lena, pleaded no contest March 10 to burglary to a building or dwelling. Judge Michael Judge withheld sentencing and placed him on two years of probation with conditions including five months in county jail.

Deputies responded to 103 incidents, including automobile theft on Poplar Road in the town of Richmond; a disturbance on Home Street in Wittenberg; one 911 call; two traffic hazards; two welfare checks; 70 crashes.

Cleanup from blizzard begins

Cleanup from the 2 feet of snow dropped by Blizzard Elsa is underway. Many businesses and school districts closed March 16-17, but some reopened their doors on St. Patrick's Day. City and county government offices, and the U.S. Post Office, opened March 17 after the storm closed down much of the area the day before.
