Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club will host a fundraiser on Saturday, June 14, at Old Town Hall in Townsend. The event will include a trail ride, club meeting and pig roast. Open to the public, the event will start with a short meeting at 2 p.m., followed by an ATV/UTV trail ride on new trails in the Townsend area. Beginning at 3 p.m. there will be meat raffles, music, pig roast, bonfire and refreshments, well into the evening.

Listen for the siren and watch for the helicopter. The 2014 Community Safety Fair takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 14, at Community Memorial Hospital near the Oconto Falls Ambulance Garage, 855 S. Main St.

Bird City Oconto has several events planned for the summer, beginning with a program by Dave Halfmann, of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, about bald eagles at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 13, at the Farnsworth Public Library, 715 Main St., Oconto. A Storybook Walk is scheduled the following day. “We Planted a Tree” will be read at Bond Community Park, located at state Highway 22 across the Oconto River from Holtwood Park.

Back when I was still teaching at Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, I would sometimes have my freshman English classes read a neat little novel called “The Summer of My German Soldier” by Bette Greene. It’s a historical novel that addresses the issues of love, prejudice and self-worth. The protagonist, Patty Bergen, is a 13-year-old who lives in Jenkinsville, Arkansas, during World War II.

The first designation of an official “farm-to-market” road goes back to January 1937, in the flat, dry land of Texas, quite some distance from the path around the Falls. This project may have been some part of an economic recovery plan, as the nation worked its way out of the Great Depression.

The 50th member of the Oconto Falls Wall of Fame, Maggie Jones, was inducted June 1 at the 2014 high school graduation ceremonies. The Wall of Fame honors former graduates who have been successful in life, as selected by the Class of 50 past. This year, it a member of the Class of 1964. For each member inducted, a plaque is hung in the high school hallway. Jones grew up in Oconto Falls, the third of Vic and Jerry Bast’s six children.

The building trades class at Gillett High School constructed a number of projects during the 2013-14 school year for community members, area towns and the school district. The projects included a 32- by 36-foot garage, kitchen cabinets, 15 bookcases, three kiosks, five Itso cabinets, three large storage cabinets, and tongue and groove siding. The two-hour class offers hands-on experience in constructing projects for the community.

Junior pitcher Riley Gruetzmacher struck out nine batters, but it was not enough as Oconto Falls High School lost 4-2 at Clintonville in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 regionals June 3. The Panthers rallied for two runs in the final inning but could not get all the way back.
