John “Buzzy” C. Olsen, 69, Gillett, died on April 4, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born on Oct. 22, 1945, to John and Ruth (Dickson) Olsen in the town of Lessor. John attended Gillett High School, graduating in 1964. John and Mary (Westenberger) were united in marriage at St. John’s Catholic Church on Oct. 25, 1963. She preceded him in death on Jan.

Greg Martens, 92, Oconto Falls, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015, at a Madison-area hospice care facility. He was born March 13, 1923, in Coleman to Charles and Julia (Rabichaud) Martens. Following graduation from high school and attending college in Oshkosh, Greg entered the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, now known as the U.S.

Two of my closest friends are retired mathematics teachers. How did that happen? Mathematicians look at the world in slightly different ways from the rest of us. And sometimes, the things they say make me look at things a little differently, too. Case in point: a recent comment about a cowlick sent one of my Euclidean friends into a discourse on DNA and mathematical principles. You know about cowlicks, right?

Family traditions are quite often part of the Easter celebration along the path around the Falls, and this year was no exception, with a few new ones thrown in. Travel can be part of the tradition, and such was the case with this observer, who made his way to New England for a visit and a family gathering. With a grandson who just turned 2 and another youngster a few months younger, it was a time to bring back memories.

The Kelly Lake Sportsman’s Club, with assistance of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, has completed two projects aimed at improving the Kelly Lake fishery. A walleye and perch stocking program was completed prior to lake freeze-up last fall, and a walleye spawning reef improvement project was completed over the winter. A young Oconto Falls High School baseball team finished sixth last season in the Bay Conference. Heading into this year with six starters back, the Panthers aren’t getting any respect. “I think we’re going to be a stronger team,” coach Charlie Rochon said. “We’re picked to finish dead last in the Bay Conference, and I actually kind of welcome that because I think we’re a lot better than that.
