Gillett council approves tourism, economic development efforts

The Gillett City Council approved three financial contributions to boost local tourism and economic development during its regular monthly meeting May 1. Council members OK’d a $2,000 joint marketing agreement with the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region (TEDCOR), $1,000 toward the fireworks display at the Gillett Independence Day celebration and $250 to support the annual Roy Hubbard Memorial Truck Show at Zippel P

Johnson plans to vote against federal budget bill
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson is not in support of the budget reconciliation bill currently going through Congress because it doesn’t make enough cuts to the federal budget. The Wisconsin senator announced that in a speech May 3 during the Shawano County Republican Party’s annual dinner, which boasted more than 100 people, at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil.

Tigerton man sentenced in shooting at mailbox
A Town of Grant man was sentenced last week to 18 months in prison for firing a shotgun and hitting a mail carrier with birdshot. According to court documents, Benjamin L. Joos, 44, of rural Tigerton, said he didn’t recognize a minivan parked at his mailbox on Sept. 24, 2024.

Former Shawano police chief has new job
Brad Rabideau didn’t wait long before diving back into the workforce. After retiring as Shawano’s police chief Feb. 3, he was sworn in at the end of March as the new police chief for the Stockbridge-Munsee Police Department. “He will be working full time up at Stockbridge now. That’s going to be nice to have him up there with his experience,” Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner said.

Main Street reconstruction design phase in motion
All of the public comments are in, and environmental documentation is underway as the city of Shawano and Wisconsin Department of Transportation prepare for the 2028 reconstruction of Main Street from Zingler Avenue north to the bridge over the Shawano Lake Outlet Channel. Robert Walters Jr.
Robert Walters Jr., of Morgan, entered the gates of heaven with family at his side on Sunday, April 27, 2025, after suffering a stroke. Bob was born in Green Bay on May 17, 1950, to Florabelle Steber and Robert Walters Sr. Growing up, he caddied at Oneida Golf and Riding and enjoyed telling stories of caddying for Vince Lombardi from time to time. He was a 1968 graduate of Premontre High School.

Neil Bigelow
Neil Bigelow passed away at home Wednesday, April 30, 2025. He was born to Edward and Ella (Hertwig) Bigelow July 2, 1935, in Oconto Falls. Neil attended area schools and graduated from Oconto Falls High School with the class of 1953. He worked for Scott Paper and Kimberly Clark for 44 years. From Neil’s first marriage, he has one son, Randy.

Let the experts determine forest health
As I gaze out our patio door this late-April morning, I can see clearly that Otter Run is awakening from its winter slumber. The ice went out two weeks ago; the lake is placid and peaceful today. The reflection of the trees on the water shows they are leafing out. Unfortunately, that means Jon is sneezing and wheezing as his allergies are kicking in big time. I’m blessed that I’m not prone to this affliction.
