Shawano’s boys wrestling team earned 225 points and placed 14th in the Battle of the Bay at Bay Port High School on Dec. 13.
“I was proud of the boys today,” coach Mike Homan said. “They wrestled hard in all of their matches and continue to improve.”
Marcus Brezgel placed sixth, and Nikkolas Waukau and Dane Hodkiewicz each finished eighth. Kody Popelka and Drew Chelberg each took ninth place, and Kian Morstad was 10th.
Cash Panske and Jorel Shaver each place 14th, Collin Piper took 16th, and Austin Stickney was 18th.
Homan said Shawano standouts included Brezgel, Popelka, Waukau and Chelberg.
“(Brezgel) continues to wrestle well and steadily improve. I like the way he works hard and learns at every competition. His offense has really taken the next step as he scored a good amount of points today,” Homan said. “Kody Popelka had a great day of wrestling as well. He continues to advance his technique and wrestled out of some tough positions today.
“Nikkolas Waukau … continues to wrestle well in his first season of varsity action. Drew Chelberg … was heavy with his hands and earned three pins today. He continues to show how his leadership and attention to details. He is going to make great strides during the rest of the season.”
