A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Muriel “Midge” J. Acra (nee Swanson) passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025. She entered into her eternal life surrounded by her loving daughters.
She was born in Chicago, on March 26, 1935, to her parents, Murrell and Beatrice Swanson.
Especially close with her father, it was Murrell who fostered Midge’s love of school and learning, enrolling her at the Academy of Our Lady in Chicago. She spoke fondly of the sisters there and the profound impact they had on her life, shaping her as a strong student and an independent thinker.
Midge excelled in school, particularly in writing, and would eventually attend Marquette University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism. Marquette always held a special place in Midge’s heart as it was where she met the love of her life, Roger Acra. They were united in marriage on March 22, 1958, and began their life together in Milwaukee.
Always a woman ahead of her time, upon college graduation, she was the first woman hired in the marketing department at Miller Brewery. Roger and Midge eventually relocated to Shawano, where they built a beautiful life together, including their four children, wonderful friends and many adored dogs.
Known for her warmth and wit, Midge found her biggest joy in her family. She was a talented cook, enjoyed traveling with Roger and was known by all for her big, generous heart. Her granddaughter often thought she possessed the perfect combination of strong, smart, goofy and gentle.
She prioritized, above all else, her family. They remember lovingly the stories she told, the little sayings she was known for and the way she could brighten everyone’s day with her ever present sense of humor. Midge lived life generously and was so happy just to be in the company of those she loved. We will miss her greatly but find comfort knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband.
Her family is deeply thankful for those who cared for her in the days preceding her death. It was clear how well loved she was by the Moments Hospice staff: Ellen, Dez and Emily as well as her caregivers at Primrose Retirement Community. A special thank you to Deacon Jeff Hofacker and the Rev. Robert Chinnapan of St. Edward’s Parish for their tender care, always praying with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Murrell and Beatrice Swanson; her father- and mother-in-law, George and Eleanore Acra; numerous family members and friends; and her husband, Roger.
She is survived by her three daughters, a son and their families.
Private family services were held.
Mom, Grandma, GG, we are so incredibly grateful you were ours. The grief is unimaginable, but as you always said, when things were overwhelming, “This too shall pass.” In time, the heartache will lessen as we hold onto our precious memories. You will be forever in our hearts. We love you.
