Community members living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, or those caring for someone with diabetes are invited to participate in the upcoming Healthy Living with Diabetes workshop series beginning this April in Shawano.
The six-week workshop is designed to help adults with Type 2 diabetes build confidence and learn practical skills to better manage their condition. Individuals with pre-diabetes, Type 1 diabetes and their caregivers are also welcome to attend.
Participants will gain valuable information and support on a variety of topics including: healthy eating and nutrition; food label reading and meal planning; relaxation techniques; partnering with health care providers; short-term goal setting; exercise for fitness and fun; feedback and problem solving; stress and depression management; and communicating effectively with family, friends and medical teams.
The program focuses on helping participants work effectively with their doctors and families while setting personal goals to better manage their health and daily lives. Each session encourages participants to learn new skills, share experiences and support others in the process.
The workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon beginning April 15 in room 103 at Shawano Community Middle School, 1050 S. Union St., Shawano.
The workshop is facilitated by trained instructors Melissa Liesner, with the Shawano County Department of Human Services, and Kelly Theis, of Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin Department of Aging and Long Term Care.
To register, contact Shawano Community Education at 715-526-2192, ext. 3102 or 3202.
This program is offered in partnership with the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Wolf River Region and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin Department of Aging and Long-Term Care.
