Gillett man dies in Highway 22 crash

A two-vehicle crash on Sept. 20 on state Highway 22 near the intersection of state Highway 22 and County Road P has killed a Gillett man.

Deputies and other first responders immediately responded to the scene of the accident in the Town of Gillett after getting the call at about 10:26 a.m. and observed a gray Volkswagon SUV in the west ditch that had extensive damage and a Chevrolet pickup truck in the southbound lane with extensive damage. A preliminary investigation revealed the pickup, operated by a 22-year-old man from Sobieski, was traveling south and a gray SUV driven by a 24-year-old man and occupied by a 2-year-old child, was traveling north.

The SUV operated left of the centerline and came in contact with the front of the truck, according to a sheriff’s department press release. As a result of the impact, the truck started on fire, and other motorists on scene were able to suppress the fire and assist the driver out of the truck.

The SUV driver died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The child and the truck driver were transported to a hospital in Green Bay for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the sheriff’s department and the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office. No other information is being released at this time, according to the press release.
