Former Menominee County Sheriff Richard Moses Sr. died unexpectedly at his home Dec. 9. He was 78.
Area law enforcement departments extended condolences to his family and friends.
“Our condolences go out to the family of (Ret.) Sheriff Richard Moses Sr. during this difficult time,” wrote the Menominee Tribal Police Department. “Sheriff Moses honorably served our community for many years and was a proud member of the Menominee Nation.”
Moses worked in law enforcement since 1968 until his retirement in 1993.
He first served as constable for Berry Lake, east of Keshena, in 1968. He moved on to become a deputy with the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department in 1974, head game warden in 1976 and investigator for Menominee County in 1978. In 1986, he was elected sheriff for Menominee County, retiring in 1993.
His obituary read, “I would like to be remembered as a lawman, adventurer, trapper, hunter, a good father, granddad and a loving husband.”
Moses is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 33 years, six children, 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be conducted at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in the spring.
