To the editor:
I support Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race.
When I served locally in the circuit court, Attorney General Schimel provided assistance to our district attorney office on more than one case that was complex.
I believe that Judge Schimel interprets the law, believing that the legislature decided public policy issues. It appears that his opponent has little qualms about substituting her opinion of what the law should be, called judicial activism. Her California fundraiser stressed redrawing congressional district boundaries, which were designed to be done once each decade, following the census. We are now near the middle of this decade.
Despite the thrust of multiple 30-second television ads, the Supreme Court does not sentence criminals and seldom if ever should substitute its judgement where a local judge considers the many factors that fit into a logical penalty. I believe that Judge Schimel is more likely to take that approach.
While Judge Schimel has a prosecution history, he has been handling civil matters on his current court docket and has a well-rounded background. Dane County judges like his opponent only handle one area of the law, unlike circuit court judges outside the major metropolitan courts.
Please vote for Judge Schimel on or before April 1.
