Making decisions is something done nearly every moment in life. When to get up in the morning? What to do that day? What to wear? What to eat? Those are the mundane everyday kinds of things.
There are more life changing things that go on in the course of a lifetime. What school to go to? Who to marry? How many children to have? Where to live? What job to pursue? Those are the life altering and most crucial things to ponder as the days of our lives pass us by. Now that I am a senior citizen, I think of these things.
In thinking back, I realize that I didn’t always make conscious decisions on these important matters. Some of them just kind of fell into place.
Right now, I am deciding that this column has gotten way too serious from what I intended. The decision that has been weighing on my mind the past couple of months was planned to be somewhat more light-hearted than a searching discovery of why I did what I did in my past life.
While I loved my mattress for many years, the past couple of months I have woken up with low back pain, which went away as I went through the day. I love my mattress. I thought, I don’t want a different one.
The Select Comfort mattress was perfect for my farmer husband and me, as he liked a soft mattress, and I prefer mine to be firm. It arrived in pieces, and had to be put together. I remember we worked well into the night to get the thing together, but both of us had a great night of sleep afterwards. That continued until he passed away.
When I moved here nine years ago, the bed came with me. Whenever it would seem to be losing air, I could push a button and once again my side was firm. I can recall being on trips and trying to sleep in a hotel bed, and I would be missing my mattress. However, now it seemed that it was time for it to be replaced.
What to replace it with was my question. It seems there are so many options, my head was spinning. Should I get another Select Comfort, or should I explore something else? Then I questioned whether I needed a queen size bed any longer. If I had a regular size, it would not take up so much space. As I am getting older, I wondered if I should have one where the foot or head could be raised?
All of these thoughts chased through my brain, to the point of deciding not to replace it at all. Then, one morning I thought it was silly to have a backache when I woke up. So, off to the store I went and tested mattresses. Those short-term tests still held questions, but I picked the one that seemed to feel the best.
The mattress arrived, and to date I spent one night sleeping on it. It certainly was different, and I had a bit of trouble drifting off to sleep. My pillow needed shifting for optimum neck support and I woke in the morning with no aching back.
Does this mean I love it? Well, I think I will need a little more time for that statement to be made. For now, I will say that it seems to be the right decision.
