Shawano Area Writers held its meeting April 21 in the Veslak room at the Shawano Public Library. Attendees were Marilyn Kroenke, Wendy Goerl, Svitlana Podgorma, Manuel Moraleda, Barb King, Trudy Bosman, John Mutter, Tom Thorstenson, Twilla Beyer, Nick Wudtke and John Krizan.
Krizan was a member before but now has written a book about the ghostly actives on the farm he has lived on for twenty years.
John Mutter called the meeting to order because Dennis Vickers, president, and Lee Pulaski, vice president, were both absent. He also presented the treasurer’s report.
The club had a moment of silence for the passing of our good friend and fellow writer Irma Timmons-Brunner. We will miss hearing the plays she recited without looking at a script, the violin pieces and the welcoming smile.
At our last meeting, a friend brought in a note from Timmons-Brunner saying that The Trilogy Publishing Company will be publishing six of her plays under one title. Also, the Green Publishing Company might publish her short story “The Black Dahlia.”
The George Putz Memorial Student Writing Contest will be presenting awards to the winners on May 15 at 1 p.m. at Mielke Theater. There were 160 entries and every category had entries.
In new business, dues were collected, and elections were held for this year’s officers.
The officers are president Tom Thorstenson, vice president Marilyn Kroenke, treasurer John Mutter and secretary Barb King.
A writing workshop will be held on June 1 at Beans and Books meeting room for anyone interested, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
John Mutter will find out more about writing courses that are held at The Clearing in Door County.
Marilyn Kroenke started the readings with her story entitled “What’s for Dinner, Mom?” Abraham moved to America with his wife and five children. The children were having a problem with local food. Abraham decided to buy a goat and slaughter it in his backyard like they did in his country.
Trudy Bosman shared the story “Fred D. Wolf Tries to Help Out.” Little Red Riding Hood had a basket to take to Grandma’s house, but then a friend asks her to go to the mall. Fred D. says he’ll deliver the basket so she can go with her friend. When he arrives at Grandma’s house with the basket, Grandma thinks he ate Little Red Riding Hood.
Mick and Dave are in a tavern telling how they came upon their magic swords from the book “Parabolic Magnetic Key” from the Black Needle Series by Nick Wudtke.
Manuel Moraleda told a story of how the Japanese Army announces over the radio that all the men ages 17-75 of this village must go to the shed in the park on a certain day. When the men do this, all 25 men are loaded into trucks and taken to prison camps where they stay until the war is over.
Tom Thorstenson told a story and says he has always wanted to be royalty. He has named himself King Zog IV. King Zog I was taken and II and III don’t have any importance. King Zog IV is ruler of Debanian, but don’t try to find it on a map.
In Barb King’s book “The Children in the Garden,” Jillian learns from her neighbors that they hear children’s voices and laughter during the night coming from her backyard, as well as blue fluttering lights. When someone checks, nothing is there.
Wendy Goerl read from her chronicles of creating her Hearthstone Saga.
