Garret Gubbels, a University of North Dakota graduate and certified flight instructor from Abrams, was named UND’s certified flight instructor of the month for October.
A certified flight instructor is a pilot who has been trained in how to teach people how to fly. Flight instructors take students up in an aircraft and do much of their teaching in the cockpit.
As part of the certified flight instructor of the month selection process, students of the CFIs are invited to submit nominations.
Gubbels has years of experience as a flight instructor.
“He shares everything he has learned over his years in a fun and educational way. He promotes free thinking and decision making, but will help guide you to the right decision when needed,” according to one nomination. “He is a very thorough and detail-oriented instructor who pushes and motivates me to be a better CFI candidate every flight. He knows when to crack a joke and when to be serious, and I am very grateful that he is my CFI. I have learned so much from him, and he deserves to be CFI of the Month for all these reasons and more.”
A native of Abrams who attended Oconto Falls High School, Gubbels graduated from UND in 2019 with a bachelor of science degree in commercial aviation. He holds certified flight instructor, certified flight instructor instrument and multiengine instructor ratings.
“My time at UND has been full of new experiences and opportunities to grow in my career,” Gubbels said. ”I love getting the opportunity to teach new students, and especially love working with potential flight instructors, honing their teaching skills.
“In my future flight career, I’m hoping to enter corporate flying. I enjoy the community at UND Aerospace, and I appreciate UND Aerospace’s leadership and my amazing students for this recognition.”
