The development of Gillett’s new campground, already slowed by the weather, experienced another delay recently when the excavator uncovered two, 300-gallon underground tanks at the site. Although the tanks were empty, the Department of Natural Resources took samples of the soil nearby.

The historical connection between logging and the railroad industry is the subject of a presentation at the newly restored Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum. Brad Pagels, a logging railroad expert, will present Tracks in the Timber at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the museum, located off County Road F, just east of Lakewood. Pagels will tell how railroads, introduced to the Northwoods by W.A. Holt in 1903, changed the way logging was done.

Albert “Allie” Joseph Barrett entered eternal life at the age of 71, in Florida on June 25, 2013, after complications of open heart surgery. He was born April 30, 1942, in Green Bay to the late Albert and Lorraine Barrett. In 1945, Al’s family moved to Little Suamico, where his mother and father bought Geano Beach Resort. Al graduated from Oconto Falls High School, Class of 1960. Following graduation, he entered the Navy.

Two parties have expressed interest in managing a Suring apartment complex that village officials threatened to condemn if substandard living conditions are not corrected. In May, a letter was sent from the village to the apartment owner, the Suring Non-Profit Housing Corporation, threatening to condemn Pioneer Villa Apartments.

There wasn’t much more Mike Maass could have accomplished last season as coach of the Appleton North High School boys volleyball team. The Lightning finished 34-0 and captured the program’s first state title. For his efforts, Maass was named coach of the year by Volleyball Magazine. Maass, who is a 1989 Oconto Falls High School graduate, was a little surprised when he found out he had won the award. “It’s a great honor,” Maass said.

The third annual Kelly Lake Triathlon took place on July 6 with 140 participants completing in the 1/2- mile swim, 15.5-mile bike ride and 3.4-mile run. At 8:20 p.m. July 1, a female driver was westbound on County Road W in the town Riverview, left the road and struck a porch on a house about 75 feet off the roadway. The exact location of the home was not available. Her van sustained minor damage. At 1:04 p.m. July 5, two female drivers were injured in a two-vehicle accident on County Road I at Fuller Lane in the town of Oconto Falls.
