Folks who think all the fun in Shawano ends with the last day of summer could be mistaken this year as the city’s parks and recreation department is launching a new fall event.

Park After Dark will take place at Arlington Park, 300 N. Humphrey Circle, Shawano, on Sept. 18, Oct. 2 and Oct. 16, all Thursdays. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with activities, campfires and family-friendly movies.

The Ho-Chunk Nation filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court last month, accusing a company called Kalshi of breaking state, federal and tribal laws that regulate gambling.

In Wisconsin, sports betting is mostly illegal, except at tribal casinos. Those tribes operate under agreements with the state.

Kalshi has an app and website that allows people to put money on the outcome of events, including whether a team will win or lose.

Members of the Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning Committee approved conditional use permits for an animal rescue operation and a mini warehouse project when they gathered Sept. 3.

Following public hearings on the issues, county supervisors approved the requests with minimal discussion.

Regular hours are back at the Shawano County Courthouse.

Summer hours had been in effect since Memorial Day.

Effective Sept. 8, the courthouse is once again open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Folks looking to the sky when ducks fly by might see some that have been tagged by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

DNR wildlife technicians like Roberta Bushmaker put bands on birds all over the state. Bushmaker recently completed another round this summer helping to tag mallard and wood ducks to keep track of populations in places like the Navarino Wildlife Area.

Members of Oconto American Legion Post 74 recently directed $500 to the purchase of back-to-school supply backpacks.

The packs were assembled by the staff at Bay Impressions, 1109 Main St., Oconto, and then provided directly to the Oconto Unified School District.
