The Waterways Association of Menominee and Shawano Counties has received an international Leadership and Service Award for significant community education and outreach efforts in water resource management.
WAMSCO was recognized Nov. 6 by the North American Lake Management Society at its annual international symposium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The sward honors individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding leadership, service and the practical application of lake and reservoir management. Award selection is based on measurable community impact, level of involvement, sustainability of initiatives and innovation in lake management.
“One person can have that spark and reach so many people. Don’t ever think that you can’t make a huge difference,” said Shanda Hubertus, WAMSCO president, while accepting the NALMS award.
Receiving the NALMS international award follows WAMSCO’s statewide recognition earlier this year, when the association received the Wisconsin Lakes Stewardship Award for excellence in public engagement at the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Convention. The back-to back awards highlight WAMSCO’s continued excellence in community-driven water resource management.
Founded in 2014 and based out of Shawano, WAMSCO is composed of a fully volunteer-based board of directors and three staff members. Its mission is water conservation for the entire watershed: lakes, rivers, creeks and groundwater.
WAMSCO actively encourages local lakes, rivers and watershed groups to partner with them to strengthen regional collaboration and share resources. In addition to its ongoing projects, WAMSCO provides a wide range of services to the community and is always seeking future projects to improve local waterways.
