It’s the end of an era in Townsend.

Mike’s Super Market, the northern Oconto County community’s only grocery store, will close its doors Oct. 31 after more than 40 years in the Janesch family.

Raffle baskets were plentiful as local residents looked around Sept. 19 during the Empty Bowls, Caring Hearts fundraiser at Shawano Community High School. The event helps Shawano Area Matthew 25 to operate its emergency shelter, which opens again in October, and health clinic, which operates year-round.

St. Paul Lutheran Church’s SPYRT (St. Paul Youth Rejoicing Together) was having fun serving up food to those escaping the rain Sept. 19 at the Bonduel Fire Station during Founders Day. SPYRT meets Wednesdays at the church and helps Bonduel youths provide community service and grow their faith.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, in his bid to become Wisconsin’s next governor, used the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to call for legislation that requires schools to teach students about 9/11, including the terrorist attacks, the people who lost their lives and what happened after that fateful day.

Shirley Hinze’s first try to defeat Rep. Elijah Behnke for the 6th Assembly District seat ended with a loss, but she believes the current state of matters in Wisconsin and the United States requires someone with her sensibilities in the state capitol, so she’s trying again to make it happen.

• Madonna D. Pecore, 57, Green Bay, pleaded no contest Sept. 16 to possession of narcotic drugs. Judge Katherine Sloma withheld sentencing and placed her on two years of probation with conditions.

• Jon L. Hostetettler, 54, Appleton, pleaded no contest Sept. 16 to possession of methamphetamine. Sloma withheld sentencing and placed him on two years of probation with conditions.

Sept. 20

• Isaiah M. Drella, 29, Sobieski, was charged Sept. 14 with failure to comply with an officer trying to take him into custody and misdemeanor counts of possession of amphetamine/LSD/psilocin, possession of THC, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct. Conley set a $5,000 cash bond and adjourned his initial appearance until Oct. 15.

Turtle Joe is still at it.

For more decades, Joe Skaleski and Bonnie Splitt have been helping preserve the turtle species in their own unique way.

“There are 11 species of turtles in Wisconsin,” Splitt said. “Our misison is to help preserve them.”

Each summer for the past 40 years or so, the couple has overseen the hatching of about 1,000 turtle eggs.
