Ice Bears advance to state tournament

After defeating the Lakeshore Lightning by a 4-0 score Dec. 4 and a 3-1 score Jan. 17, the third time was a charm for the Bay Area Ice Bears girls hockey team as they punched their ticket to state, defeating the Lightning 3-1 on Feb. 27.

Bay Area will play the Cap City Cougars at 4:30 p.m. March 5 at Bob Suter’s LEGACY20 Arena in Middleton in the state semifinal game. The winner will play March 7 against the winner of the Superior Spartans vs. St. Croix Valley contest.

Neither team scored in the first period, and Lakeshore took a 1-0 lead as the second period began.

Bay Area’s Elizabeth Zunker tied the game at 3:44 with assists from Abby Mommaerts and Hannah Von Haden. Addison Dahl put the Ice Bears up 2-1 at 8:31 with Faye Brunke assisting.

Brunke scored at 15:38 in the third period to wrap up the scoring, as Bay Area made plans for the state tournament.

Bay Area goalie Reese Spiering had 16 saves, and Lakeshore goalie Elizabeth Bowers had 32.

Bay Area was penalized four times for eight minutes, while Lakeshore had three infractions for six minutes.
