Wisconsin had 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending June 7, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
With little precipitation early in the week, many farmers were able to wrap up planting and make good progress harvesting alfalfa. Much-needed rain fell later in the week across much of the state.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 8% very short, 27% short, 62% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 5% very short, 21% short, 67% adequate, and 7% surplus.
Corn planting was 97% complete. Corn was 81% emerged matching the 5-year average. Corn condition was 79% good to excellent, unchanged from last week.
Soybean planting was 95% complete. Soybeans were 79% emerged compared to the average of 72%. Soybean condition was 79% good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week.
Oat were 88% emerged compared to the average of 87%. Oats were 17% headed. Oat condition was rated 79% good to excellent, up 2 percentage points from last week.
Winter wheat fields were 53% headed, matching the average. Winter wheat began coloring in some parts of the state. Winter wheat condition was 68% good to excellent, up 2 percentage points from last week.
The first cutting of alfalfa hay was 70% complete compared to the average of 63%. All hay condition was 69% good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
Pasture and range condition was 61% good to excellent, up 3 percentage points from last week.
