About 3,000 individuals submitted comments in support of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin’s proposed Hard Rock Casino and Hotel project in Kenosha during the recently concluded public comment period on the environmental assessment.
The volume of supportive comments is six times greater than those in opposition.
Supportive comments were submitted by tribal members, Kenosha County residents and supporters from across Wisconsin, as it advances through the final stages of federal review. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is now reviewing the administrative record following the close of the comment period.
“The response during the public comment period clearly shows the excitement and support surrounding this project,” said Joey Awonohopay, tribal chairman.
Awonohopay said the volume and consistency of supportive comments reflect years of engagement and collaboration, and he encouraged the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take the next step in the process.
“This level of support sends a clear signal that the community is ready,” he said. “We respectfully encourage the Bureau of Indian Affairs to advance the project promptly so it may continue moving through the approval process.”
Once the BIA completes its review and analysis of all comments provided, it will determine whether the project would result in any significant environmental impacts. If it concludes that there are no such impacts, it can then make a finding that the project is both in the best interest of the tribe and not detrimental to the Kenosha community.
The project then would advance to Gov. Tony Evers for his approval.
