Corn, oat, soybeans plantings down from 5-year averages

Wisconsin had 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending May 3, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Where fields were dry enough, manure spreading, spring tillage and fertilizer applications took place. Planting of soybeans and corn continued, although soil temperatures remain on the cool side.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 0% very short, 3% short, 55% adequate and 42% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 0% very short, 2% short, 68% adequate and 30% surplus.

Corn planting was 10 percent complete compared to the 5-year average of 15%. Oat planting was 29% complete compared to the average of 41%. Ten percent of oats had emerged. Soybean planting was 10% complete compared to the average of 13%. Spring tillage was 35% complete compared to the average of 44%.

Pasture and range condition was 50% good to excellent, up 5 percentage points from last week.

Winter wheat condition was 56% good to excellent, up 3 percentage points from last week.
