The Shawano Area Writers are reviving their annual youth writing contest. The group last ran the contest in 2008.
The contest, renamed the George Putz Memorial Writing Contest, is open to students in grades 1-12 living in Shawano and Menominee counties. Putz donated $77,000 to the writers group through his estate in 2013.
The contest is divided into three categories: poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Poetry is limited to two typed pages; fiction and nonfiction entries will be limited to 1,000 words. The contest has three divisions: grades 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12.
Students may enter as many times as they want, in any category, but each entry must have a separate entry form.
There will be first-, second- and third-place winners in each category of each age group. The prizes for grades 1 through 8 are $20, first place; $15, second place; and $10, third place. For grades 9 through 12, the prizes are $50, first place; $25, second place; and $15, third place.
All entries must be received by April 11. Entries may be mailed to John Mutter Jr., N2787 McDonald Road, Shawano, WI 54166, or they may be sent electronically to Lee Pulaski at dleepulaski@yahoo.com with “George Putz Memorial Writing Contest” in the subject line. An awards ceremony is tentatively planned for early May.
