Shawano County Library is holding a community winter challenge as people read “Stamped from the Beginning” by Ibram X. Kendi during February.
The reading challenge will run Feb. 1-28. Participants can register for the challenge at https://shawanolibrary.beanstack.org/reader365 or by using the Beanstack Tracker app. There are also several family-friendly companion books available to read, including “Stamped” by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi; “Stamped (for Kids)” by Sonja Cherry-Paul, Jason Reynolds, and Ibram X. Kendi; and “Antiracist Baby” by Ibram X. Kendi.
A panel discussion about antiracism will be held on Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Shawano Public Library, 128 S. Sawyer St., Shawano. The discussion will be led by local experts Shannon Holsey, president of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, and Angel Saavedra Cisneros, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at St. Norbert College.
The books and discussion center on the history of racism in the United States and how people can identify and quell those tendencies within themselves.
