Shawano’s boys wrestlers enjoyed a great night on the mats with the Hawks winning all three nonconference duals at home Dec. 4.
The Hawks defeated Oconto 58-12, Bonduel 55-12 and Ashwaubenon 52-24. The only losses for Shawano were forfeits due to injuries.
“I really liked the way the kids fought tonight,” coach Mike Homan said. “In competitive matches, they continued to fight and move forward in their attacks.”
Homan highlighted the play of Nikkolas Waukau, who bumped up a weight class to get a win while going 3-0; Dane Hodkiewicz, who wrestled well and battled back from an early deficit in his Ashwaubenon match; Dylan Gartner, who went 3-0; Austin Stickney, who went 3-0 and battled back for a pin in his Ashwaubenon match; and Collin Piper, who went 3-0, using a double leg takedown in his matches.
“Kian Morstad was solid at 150 tonight getting some great wins,” Homan said. “Kody Popelka had some tight matches and wrestled well to go 3-0. Marcus Brezgel battled through some things and really showed some offensive fire power in his matches going 3-0.”
Jorel Matchapatow did a great job at 175, Homan added.
“I really liked how he battled and continued to wrestle through some scramble situations, and Drew Chelberg was a stud at 190 tonight,” the coach said. “He had one of the toughest matches of the night against Oconto and really did well winning with two pins and a major decision.”
