After his coaching career, Werbelow entered the business world and built a successful professional career.
He worked for Montgomery Ward, Spiegel Inc., Robert Morton Co. and Kierluff Electronics before serving as vice president of Fredericks of Hollywood. He retired following a career in business.
Werbelow’s athletic legacy was further honored with his induction into the UW-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.
Mackenzie (Buss) Wilson
Mackenzie (Buss) Wilson, class of 2013, established herself as one of the most accomplished swimmers in Shawano High School history. A four-year participant and four-year letter winner, Wilson made an immediate impact as a freshman, breaking six individual school records, earning Bay Conference first team and all-state honors, winning the WIAA state championship in the 100-yard backstroke, and being named team most valuable player.
Wilson continued to excel throughout her high school career. As a sophomore, she earned her second consecutive Bay Conference first team and all-state honors and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke at state.
During her junior season, she broke the Bay Conference and sectional records in the 100-yard backstroke and set a new WIAA state record that had stood since 2004. She became a two-time state champion, earned additional state medals in the 100-yard butterfly, and was named the Green Bay Press-Gazette All-Area Swimmer of the Year.
As a senior, Wilson added to her career, finishing with eight school records and contributing to three relay records. Over four years, she competed in 14 events at the state meet, earning seven state medals. She was a Bay Conference first team and all-state swimmer all four years, earned three team MVP honors, served as senior captain and competed in the 2012 USA Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.
Wilson’s success extended beyond the pool. She maintained a 3.96 GPA, earned USA Swimming All-American Scholastic honors, was named Optimist Scholastic Student of the Year and was recognized as the Shawano Community High School Student and Athlete of the Year. She also volunteered as a coach for Special Olympics for three years.
Following high school, Wilson continued her swimming career at the University of Louisville, competing at the NCAA Championships and helping her team achieve multiple top-eight national finishes. She also represented Louisville at the 2016 USA Swimming Olympic Trials.
Mark Tomashek
Mark Tomashek, class of 1992, was a standout two-sport athlete at Shawano High School, competing in basketball from 1988-92 and baseball from 1989-92. He earned three varsity letters in basketball and two in baseball.
On the basketball court, Tomashek scored 49 points in a single game and helped lead his team to a regional final during his senior season. He finished his career with 1,066 points, becoming the fastest player in Shawano history to reach 1,000 points in just 106 games. He ranks sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Tomashek’s accomplishments earned him numerous honors during his high school career. He set a single-season Bay Conference scoring record, was named Bay Conference player of the year, and was recognized as Shawano’s male athlete of the tear in 1992. He earned first team all-conference, honorable mention all-state and was selected to the 1992 WBCA All-Star Game.
Tomashek continued his basketball career at St. Norbert College, where he earned all-conference honors. His passion for the game eventually led him into coaching, where he has continued to make an impact on high school basketball in northeast Wisconsin.
As the varsity boys basketball coach at Denmark High School, Tomashek compiled a 117-75 record and led the program to the sectional level.
He later became the varsity boys basketball coach at Ashwaubenon High School, where he established an impressive 99-32 record and guided the Jaguars to the WIAA state tournament in 2022.
Robert (Bob) Jansen
Robert “Bob” Jansen, class of 1970, was an exceptional three-sport athlete at Shawano High School, participating in football, basketball and baseball for three years. He earned varsity letters in football in 1969 and 1970, basketball in 1969 and 1970, and baseball in 1969 and 1970. Jansen was a starter in all three sports, serving as the starting quarterback in football and starting in basketball and baseball during his junior and senior seasons.
Jansen’s accomplishments included being named second team all-conference in 1970 and earning the 1970 basketball free throw award. In baseball, he was a three-time sectional qualifier from 1968-70, earned second team all-conference honors and the pitcher award in 1970, and established himself as a key contributor to the Shawano baseball program.
Following high school, Jansen continued his basketball career at UW-Oshkosh, playing four years.
His lifelong involvement in athletics continued as he became a coach and mentor, including being named 1984 Wisconsin softball coach of the year. His dedication to baseball was further recognized with his induction into the Shawano Baseball Hall of Fame.
Jansen continued giving back to the Shawano community decades after his own playing days. In 2022, he volunteered as a coach with Shawano baseball and helped lead the team to a conference championship and sectional qualification.
Jim Allbaugh
Jim Allbaugh began his teaching and coaching career in 1966 and went on to dedicate 45 years to education and athletics. In 1984, he joined Shawano School District as a middle school math teacher, beginning a chapter of coaching and service to the Shawano athletic community. He served as head wrestling coach from 1984-94 and head cross country coach from 1986-98, leaving a lasting impact on both programs.
During Allbaugh’s tenure, Shawano cross country grew from just nine runners to more than 50, and the school captured five Bay Conference championships. His wrestling and cross country programs produced state meet qualifiers, and in both 1992 and 1994, Shawano qualified athletes for the WIAA state wrestling and state cross country meets. This was the only time in school history the same coach led two separate sports to state competition in the same year.
Allbaugh was also instrumental in growing and promoting Shawano wrestling. In 1986, he helped establish the Shawano Holiday Classic Wrestling Tournament and introduced a parade of champions for the finals, complete with lights, music, and a presentation. The format later became part of the WIAA state wrestling finals. His commitment to developing the sport extended beyond Shawano, as he served on the WIAA Wrestling Advisory Board and the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Executive Committee from 1986-90.
Allbaugh’s influence on wrestling reached far beyond the Shawano community. He was involved in the development and implementation of the 7% Rule for weight reduction, which became the accepted weight-management guideline for high school and college wrestling across the nation.
He received the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association’s 20 years of service award in 1990 and was named Shawano Public Schools’ dedicated teacher of the year in 1992. He also spent 38 years officiating WIAA and NCAA wrestling and officiated WIAA football and volleyball.
