Richard “Dick” C. Breed, 78, of Embarrass, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 23, 2013, at his home. Dick was born in Embarrass on Dec. 1, 1935, the son of Fred and Myrtle (Hanson) Breed.
On April 17, 1953, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His sea duty included serving aboard the USS Des Moines CA-134, a heavy cruiser. He also served aboard the USS New Jersey BB-62, a battleship, and was on the last cruise of the four existing battleships — New Jersey, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin — in 1954. In 1956, Dick was released from active duty to serve in the Navy Reserve, where he received his honorable discharge on April 16, 1961.
Dick then went into law enforcement, graduating from the seventh class of the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy at Camp McCoy on June 11, 1958. In 1960, Dick went to work for the Beverage & Cigarette Tax Division of the Wisconsin Tax Department. Dick talked about bodily arresting a pimp on Silver Street in Hurley who was walking his Doberman. The man had mistakenly threatened to shoot Dick, who was the inside man on a “whistle job” prostitution raid. As Dick carried the man across the street, the dog circled, snapped and growled, but did not bite. Of course, he was circled by several agents with their guns out. In 1963, Dick worked in Chicago for the Treasury Department, returning to join the State Justice Department. In 1970, he was appointed one of the then-12 special agents for the attorney general. He was one of two supervisors for the newly formed Narcotics Division. Dick was trained in wiretapping and petitioned for the first wiretap by the state. He was involved in the wiretapping and subsequent arrest of a man who killed a game warden in Brown County in 1970.
Dick left the state and entered into private business in 1972. In 1973, he purchased the Columbia Hotel in Clintonville, selling it in 1977. In 1977, Dick got his real estate license and opened the agency formerly run by George Graf. In 1979, he went to work for Hilgenberg Realty in Shawano, retiring in 2005.
Dick was a member of American Legion Post 63 of Clintonville. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing a good game of Schafskopf or “Sheephead.”
Survivors include his brother, Michael (Nina) Breed, Ohio; sisters, Winifred Reineking, Greenfield, and Mildred Ritchie, Franklin; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sylvester, Fred and Robert; a sister, Sylvia Handrich; brothers-in-law, Ken Raddant, Bill Reineking and Rudy Handrich; and a sister-in-law, Trudy Breed. A memorial service for Dick will take place later this coming spring, and inurnment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Embarrass.
