Petrakis named CMN Student of the Year

Shawano resident Christina Petrakis has been chosen as the College of Menominee Nation’s Student of the Year. Petrakis is a candidate for graduation in May 2022 with an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in public administration. She has been on the dean’s list with highest honors for fall and spring 2021 semesters. Her community service includes volunteering at Hillcrest Primary School, Olga Brener Intermediate School, Goodwill, and the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center. An enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, Petrakis is a mother that has faced challenges in her educational journey. She has navigated through personal adversities, such as anxiety, and hardships brought on from the COVID-19 pandemic, including daycares closing and the move to online learning. “I will be able to help create change and contribute to causes that matter for the Native American community,” Petrakis said. Her future plans include maintaining her grades, being more active at CMN, and gaining professional experience in her career path. CMN’s Student of the Year receives a $1,200 scholarship and will join those from other accredited tribal colleges and universities honored annually through the American Indian Higher Education Consortium.
