The Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team bounced back from a tough 58-55 loss Friday to Hortonville with a 42-31 victory over Seymour on Saturday night in Oconto Falls.
Oconto Falls coach Mike Kaczmarek Jr. said his team was just trying to get back on track.
“We were just trying to somehow, some way come out of here with a win,” Kaczmarek said. “This is a tough game to come and play after a very intense game last night.”
The difference against Seymour (2-12, 2-8 Bay Conference) was McKenna Larsen. The 5-foot-7 senior guard led all scorers with 22 points.
“She had 22, but she made some poor decisions,” Kaczmarek said. “We’re going to get that out of her, but we need her to have a complete game.”
Oconto Falls (12-2, 8-2 Bay) trailed 23-20 heading into halftime, but limited the Thunder to eight points in the second half.
“Seymour came in and made some good shots in the first half,” Kaczmarek said. “We weren’t executing on offense. They were shortening the game, they were very patient on offense. We came out in the second half and picked up the tempo a little bit.”
The Panthers played a lot of pressure defense in the third and fourth quarters, disrupting the Seymour offense.
“I think the pressure got to them,” Kaczmarek said.
All three of the Thunder’s fourth-quarter points came at the free-throw line.
Oconto Falls spent most of the fourth quarter at the line as well, hitting seven of 10 attempts. Larsen was four-for-four at the line in the fourth.
The first four baskets of the game came from beyond the 3-point arc, as Larsen and Elizabeth Manns matched Seymour’s Alise Gray and Asia Danforth with 3s to tie the game at 6-6. Oconto Falls’ Kayla Virtues hit a basket to give the Panthers the lead, which they held until midway through the second quarter.
Seymour led 23-20 at half, but the Panthers took a 29-28 lead when Larsen made a layup with a minute left in the third quarter. Larsen got a steal on the next Seymour possession and made a basket to extend the Panthers’ lead to 31-28. From there, OFHS outscored Seymour 11-3.
Carly Lemke scored seven points for the Panthers.
Gray, a 5-7 senior guard, led Seymour with seven points.
