When Shawano Community High School went looking for an athletic director, it didn’t have to look too far.
Charmaine Schreiber, who lives in Shawano, has taught and coached the last few years at Iola-Scandinavia. Before that she spent 12 years as an associate athletic director at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Fla. She’s also had experience coaching volleyball, basketball and softball.
“Charmaine had an extensive background. She was an assistant athletic director down in Orlando, very successful coach there in volleyball,” SCHS Principal Scott Zwirschitz said. “We think we’re fortunate to have her move to the area.”
Schreiber moved to Wisconsin after marrying KJ Schreiber, who is from Shawano and graduated from SCHS.
“He’s a local and an alumni,” Schreiber said. “This is my experience, athletic administration. So, I was real excited when a position opened up here in Shawano.”
Zwirschitz says having that local connection helps.
“She has ownership in what goes on in our community, and I think that’s a positive for everybody,” he said.
Schreiber, who took over the job this week after Tim Mayer stepped down last month, said moving to the area from Florida a few years ago was a bit of an adjustment, but she loves the support sports receives in the area.
“The culture up here is a very warm, welcoming environment,” she said. “I’m really excited about the community support for high school sports, as well as coverage.”
Schreiber has the added task of taking over during the school year, which gives her less time to get settled into the role.
“Sure it’s a challenge. My first goal is to start building relationships and getting to know people,” Schreiber said. “That’s what I’ve said the last couple of days. It’s a big place and we have a lot of coaching staff, and I’m excited to get to know all of them.”
The new athletic director said she sees big things for the program in the future.
“We have the structure to have a successful program,” she said. “It’s exciting. It’s great facilities, great people, wonderful community support. I’m very fortunate to be here.”
