If anyone doesn’t have time to bake, Peace United Church of Christ’s Cookie Walk can help. A big selection of Christmas cookies and candy will be available to help the busy homemaker.
Bobbi Sager and Sharon Gueths are co-chairs for the event, which will be held from 9-11 a.m. Dec. 7 at the church, 208 E. Maurer St., Shawano.
Twenty-one years ago, church member Marianne Gleisner brought the idea of the Cookie Walk from her former church. Now, each year the church hall becomes a scenic and scrumptious delight, with tables of cookies and candies of all different kinds.
“I’ve been with the cookie walk for quite a while,” said Sager, who has been co-chair for six years. “It really is quite a group because we have tables all around.”
Gueths has been co-chair for eight years.
“It’s fun and a lot of work,” she said. “We sell out almost every piece of candy and cookies.”
Church members sign up for the kind of cookie or candy they are going to make. There are roughly 30 different varieties.
The sale is held close to Christmas so everything will still be fresh for the holiday.
“The cookies that sell are the ones that young mothers don’t have time to make,” Gueths said. “The cutouts are the favorites.”
Several batches of wreath cutouts made earlier will be frosted and decorated on Monday.
“It’s always a fun time,” Sager said.
Around 20 or more people work the day of the walk, packaging and weighing the goodies. Anything that is left is sold Sunday after church.
“Some people don’t bake but work and buy,” Gueths said.
The candy costs $7 per pound. Wreaths will also be sold. Chicken soup also is available, at $6.25 per quart.
The walk usually makes around $3,000, which is used for the ministry of the church in worship, education and congregational care.
Sager and Gueths are still looking for some help with the Cookie Walk.
“We hope more people will step up,” Gueths said. “Most of the work is prepared the day before.”
