Kurt D. Buettner

Kurt D. Buettner, 54, of Shawano, lost his valiant, 10-month battle with esophageal cancer on Friday morning, Nov. 29, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. He was born Oct. 4, 1959, in Shawano, a son of Selma (Hildebrandt) Buettner and the late Clifford Buettner. Kurt attended the Gresham schools, graduating from Gresham High School in 1978. Following high school, he studied forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. On Aug. 8, 1981, he was united in marriage to the former Consuelo “Connie” Garcia, and following their marriage, the couple lived in Shawano. Kurt had been employed at Arrowcast for several years. He was later employed at the Little Rapids Corporation Shawano mill for over 20 years. At the time of his sudden illness, Kurt was employed at Walker Forge as the purchasing manager. On Jan. 20, 1994, Kurt was united in marriage to the former Michelle Syndergaard at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Kurt and Michelle have lived in Shawano since their marriage. Kurt was an avid outdoorsman. He spent time training his dogs for his annual pheasant hunts with his family in South Dakota. He loved annual trips to the boundary waters in northern Minnesota. He was also a distance runner and competed in several half-marathons. Kurt was a fan of the Packers, Badgers and NASCAR racing. Most importantly, Kurt was an extremely hard working man. His commitment to his career was important, but his love of family and friends was his true priority. He always had a smile and kind words for everyone he met. He will truly be missed. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Michelle, of Shawano; two children, Danielle (Daniel Doxtater) Buettner and Dustin Buettner, both of Green Bay; his mother, Selma Buettner, of Shawano; two brothers, Wayne (Sandy) Buettner, of Shawano, and Robert (Sheryl) Buettner, of Gresham; one sister, Valerie (Dan) Willard, of Appleton; four stepchildren, Erika Winterfeldt, Andrew, Alex and Tony Accivatti; two grandchildren, Quintin Winterfeldt and Josiah Richards; former wife, Connie (Russ) Huebner, of Shawano; father- and mother in-law, John (Nancy) Syndergaard, of Shawano; brother in-law, Jon (Barb) Syndergaard, of Pulaski; and sister in-law, Mary (Joel) Bowles, of Albertville, Minn. Kurt is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Kurt was preceded in death by his father, Clifford; a brother, Gary Buettner; and a nephew, Randy Buettner. A celebration of the life of Kurt Buettner will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of Shawano. Pastor Gisele Berninghaus will officiate. Relatives and friends may gather at Zion Lutheran Church after 9 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers and plants, the family has requested memorials in his name. Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano is assisting the family with the service arrangements.
